An introduction to various forms of healthcare data and  data collection techniques, as well as different types of databases and  development methods for using databases in small to medium-size healthcare facilities. The objective is to develop flat file and relational databases using Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel,  demonstrate familiarity with SQL (Structured Query Language), Python language, and RStudio program; and design queries applicable for the decision-making process. The application of basic statistics and research methods in health information management. Focus is on the analysis of clinical and administrative data to assist in healthcare decision making, planning, policy development, and state and national level reporting. Topics include compilation and analysis of healthcare data; identification of data sources, data collection methods, analytical and visualization techniques; data mining; clinical and biomedical research and its implications for healthcare quality. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: HAIN 650 or HIMS 650.

(Formerly HAIN 655.) A foundational overview of health informatics/information management as a profession and as a subset of the healthcare delivery system. Health informatics/information principles and practices are explored as they relate to the application, analysis, management, and architecture of health data.
